How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn on the Sunshine Coast?
Seasonal growth, grass type, and local weather — a practical schedule so your lawn stays thick and healthy year-round.
There is no single answer to how often you should mow. The Sunshine Coast has a subtropical climate — warm, wet summers and mild dry winters — and that pattern drives grass growth in ways that often surprise people who move here from further south.
This guide lays out a sensible mowing frequency for each season, explains why grass type changes the numbers, and covers the common mistakes that do real damage to a lawn over time.
🌱 Why frequency matters more than most people realise
Mowing is not just cosmetic. Every time a blade goes through grass, the plant responds — it sends energy to the cut tips, regrows faster, and thickens up if the cut height is correct. Leave it too long between mows and the grass elongates, flops sideways, and the base becomes starved of light.
Scalping means cutting off so much blade at once that the green leaf is gone and you are left with straw-coloured stems. A scalped lawn takes weeks to recover. Getting the frequency right prevents all of that.
🌿 The Sunshine Coast seasonal schedule
These are the intervals we work to when on a regular maintenance plan — starting points that shift slightly with your grass type and yard conditions.
Summer Nov – Mar
Every 7–10 days
Humidity, heat, and afternoon storms push couch and kikuyu into overdrive. Stretch to 14 days in a wet January and you'll come back to a lawn too long to cut cleanly in one pass.
Autumn Apr – May
Every 10–14 days
Growth is still solid but noticeably slower. A good window to fertilise and let the lawn thicken before winter.
Winter Jun – Aug
Every 14–21 days
Sunshine Coast winters are mild — lawns rarely go fully dormant. Couch and kikuyu slow right down but keep growing. Skipping entirely for 6 weeks is too long.
Spring Sep – Oct
Every 10–14 days
Tightening toward 7–10 as November approaches. The lawn will surprise you with how quickly it responds to warmer soil and rain. This is also when weeds flush through.
🌿 Grass type changes the numbers
✅Couch grass — fine-blade, fast-spreading, full sun lover. Needs the shortest cutting height: 25–35 mm. Cut it any longer and it goes stemmy and thin.
✅Kikuyu — robust, drought-tolerant, handles 35–50 mm well. Forgiving if you miss a week in winter, but in summer it will bulk up fast.
✅Buffalo (Sir Walter) — broader blade, great shade tolerance. Mow at 40–60 mm. More sensitive to scalping — take too much off and brown patches take time to recover.
🌱 The one-third rule
☑️ Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single mow. If the lawn has grown to 90 mm and your target height is 40 mm, take it down in stages — first to 60 mm, let it recover for a few days, then cut again.
🍃 Signs your schedule is off
☑️Thatch buildup — a soft, spongy layer at the grass base. Usually means it has been cut too high for too long.
☑️Brown stripes after mowing — the mower is hitting dry thatch or exposed stems.
☑️Weeds taking over — thin, under-maintained turf is the best environment for broadleaf weeds.
☑️Flat, matted appearance — often kikuyu that has grown long, flopped, and matted, then been cut short.

The Complete Garden Clean-Up Checklist for Sunshine Coast Homeowners
Zone by zone — work through each area so nothing gets missed before the season turns.
A garden clean-up done properly is not a single task — it is a sequence. Skip a step and you typically create more work downstream. Edge the beds before mulching, not after. Pull weeds before they seed. The order matters.
🌿 This is what we work through when we take on a full clean-up on the Sunshine Coast — written for homeowners who want to tackle it themselves, and for anyone who wants to know what to expect before booking.
✅ 1. Lawn — mow, edge, blow down
Start with the lawn. Mow at the correct height for your grass type. Do not go short if the lawn has grown out — take it down in stages to avoid scalping.
☑️Edge all the lines — lawn against beds, concrete paths, and retaining structures. Clean edges make the whole yard look ten years better.
☑️Blow all clippings off hard surfaces before moving on. Clippings left on paths go slippery and stain concrete over time.
🪴 2. Garden beds — weed, cut back, shape
☑️Pull or selectively treat weeds before they set seed. On the Sunshine Coast, the warm wet summer pushes annual weeds hard November through February.
☑️Cut back overgrown plants and remove dead stems from the base — they hold moisture and invite disease.
☑️Re-cut bed edges that have blurred to stop grass creeping back in.
🌳 3. Hedges — assess and trim if due
Not every clean-up needs a full hedge trim — but walk them and check. If they have grown past their intended shape or lost a clean face, add them to the day's work. Two to four trims per year is the Sunshine Coast standard depending on species.
🌳 4. Trees and palms — check and clear
☑️Remove dead fronds from palms — they are heavy, fall unpredictably, and are a hazard in storm season. Clear them before summer hits.
☑️Check trees for dead branches below head height or any scraping roofs and fences. Large tree work needs an arborist.
🌿 5. Paths and hard surfaces
Clear weeds from path cracks and edges. If moss or algae has built up on paved areas — particularly in shaded spots near pools — a pressure wash removes it safely. Slippery surfaces are a genuine hazard.
🌱 6. Mulch — top up last
✅ Aim for 50–75 mm depth. Fresh mulch goes on after edging, weeding, and bed reshaping. Keep it a few centimetres away from plant stems to prevent collar rot — a common problem in the humid Sunshine Coast summers.
🍃 7. Green waste — clear it same day
All cuttings, pulled weeds, dead fronds, and pruned material need to leave the property the same day. Green waste left in piles is a moisture trap, a pest habitat, and on dry days a fire risk. We take it all with us on every job.

Hedge Trimming 101: How Often and What to Look For
Timing, shape, and how much to remove — so hedges stay dense, level, and healthy through every season.
A well-maintained hedge does something no fence or wall can replicate — it is alive, it changes slightly with the seasons, and when trimmed right it has a solidity that looks like it has been there for decades.
Get the timing and technique wrong and you end up cutting far more aggressively to correct the shape — which stresses the plant and leaves gaps that take months to fill.
🌳 How often should hedges be trimmed?
On the Sunshine Coast, most ornamental hedges need trimming two to four times per year.
✅Fast-growing species (Lilly Pilly, Photinia, Murraya) — push new growth quickly and may need four trims: early spring, mid-summer, late summer, and autumn.
✅Slower-growing hedges (Viburnum, some Pittosporums) — often fine with two to three trims spread across the year, with the main cut in spring.
✅Formal clipped hedges (box hedging, topiary) — need light trims every 6–8 weeks through the growing season to hold their form.
🌱 Best time of year to trim on the Sunshine Coast
✅ Spring is the primary trimming window — growth is active, plants recover quickly, and you are getting ahead of the summer flush. Trim just as new growth appears, not after it has fully extended.
Avoid trimming immediately before a heatwave. Freshly cut material is more vulnerable to desiccation — the cut tips dry out fast in extreme heat. Winter trims are fine for most species.
✂️ How much to take off
☑ Remove the current season's new growth — roughly the outer 10–20 cm — while keeping cuts into established woody growth to a minimum. If a hedge has gone significantly beyond its intended size, bring it back over two or three trims rather than one drastic cut.
🌿 Taper the hedge so the base is wider than the top. A wider base means lower foliage receives more light and stays dense. A hedge wider at the top will thin out at the bottom and eventually die back from the ground up.
🍃 Signs a hedge needs attention now
☑️Soft, rounded profile — new growth extending past the intended shape. Easy to correct with a single trim if caught early.
☑️Bare patches at the base — lower sections thinning out because the hedge has been cut wider at the top, shading out lower growth.
☑️Leggy growth — long thin stems extending beyond the hedge body. Common in Lilly Pilly and Murraya after a wet summer.
☑️Height overrun — hedge significantly taller than intended. Height correction usually needs phasing across two seasons.

5 Signs Your Garden Needs Professional Attention Right Now
Overgrowth, weed pressure, drainage, pests, and safety — five signals your Sunshine Coast garden needs a professional.
Most garden problems do not appear overnight. They build up over weeks and months. By the time they are obvious, the work required is significantly more than it would have been earlier.
These are the five signs we see most often when a property comes to us after a period of neglect.
🌳 1. Overgrowth past the point of easy correction
There is a clear difference between a lawn that needs a mow and one that has grown to the point where a standard mow will scalp it. The same applies to hedges that have grown well beyond their intended shape.
☑️ The tell is when you look at the garden and do not know where to start. Bringing things back in stages requires knowing which species tolerate hard cuts and which do not.
🌿 2. Persistent weed pressure in lawn and beds
A few weeds in a bed are normal. Weeds that have established across the lawn, set seed into the beds, and are outcompeting planted material are a different situation entirely.
On the Sunshine Coast, the warm humid climate means weeds grow aggressively through summer. Once they set seed, the problem multiplies — each plant can drop hundreds of seeds before you pull it.
💧 3. Drainage problems — water sitting where it should not
☑️Water pooling near the house — after rain, particularly around the footings or against fence lines.
☑️Low sections of lawn that stay wet — standing water kills grass, creates a mosquito habitat, and softens fence posts.
☑️Erosion or compaction in areas that regularly flood during Sunshine Coast downpours.
🌱 4. Signs of pest or disease in the lawn
Irregular brown patches — especially ones appearing in a rough circular pattern or spreading quickly — are often the first visible sign of lawn disease or pest activity. Armyworm, lawn grubs, and fungal disease are all present on the Sunshine Coast.
✅ Pull back the turf at the edge of a brown patch. White grubs or irregular root damage = grub problem. Grass pulls up cleanly but soil looks healthy = likely surface fungus or heat stress. Get a professional eye before treating anything.
🌳 5. Safety hazards — dead wood, obscured paths, slippery surfaces
☑️Dead branches over walkways — these need to go before storm season.
☑️Paths obscured by overgrown beds — a tripping hazard, especially for older family members.
☑️Slippery moss on paving near pool areas — a pressure wash removes it safely but the hazard is real.

Why Green Waste Removal Matters After Every Garden Job
Fire risk, council rules, and lawn disease — why clearing clippings and branches should always be the last step.
✅ Every booking we take includes green waste removal as standard — not an optional add-on. When we are done, all the clippings, prunings, and pulled material leave with us.
🌿 It is a fire risk, particularly through summer
Pile up a few days' worth of grass clippings and prunings and you have a dense mass of organic material that is surprisingly flammable once it dries out. Left to dry against a fence line or under a deck, piled green waste can also harbour embers from nearby events. Sunshine Coast Regional Council fire risk guidelines are explicit about maintaining cleared zones around structures.
☑️ Council rules on kerbside green waste apply
✅Check your collection date — Sunshine Coast Council operates a kerbside green waste service with days that vary by suburb.
✅Present material correctly — bundled or in the appropriate bin, not loose in front of a neighbour's property.
✅Large volumes? Resource recovery centre drop-off is available across the Coast for when a single kerbside collection is not enough.
🌱 Moisture and disease sit under piled cuttings
Grass clippings left on the lawn in thick clumps block sunlight and trap moisture. In the Sunshine Coast humidity, this creates ideal conditions for fungal disease. A lawn that looks fine after mowing can develop brown patches within a week where clippings were left sitting.
Pulled weeds left lying on soil are not neutralised — many will re-root if moisture returns within a few days. Weeds with seed heads are worse: seeds continue to ripen and drop even after the plant is pulled.
🍃 The result is not finished until the waste is gone
A lawn that has been mowed and edged looks finished when clippings are cleared from paths and hard surfaces. It looks unfinished — regardless of how well the cutting was done — when there is green debris on driveways or piled against fences. This is why we include a walkway blow-down on every job.
✅ If you DIY — your options
✅Composting — works for small volumes of clippings, soft trimmings, non-seeding weeds.
✅Kerbside collection — Sunshine Coast Council, check your suburb's schedule and bin requirements.
✅Resource recovery drop-off — several sites across the Coast, check Council website for locations, hours, and fees.

Couch, Kikuyu, Buffalo: Which Grass Do You Have and Why It Matters
Growth habits, mowing heights, and watering needs change by variety — a practical guide to knowing your lawn.
The three most common lawn types on the Sunshine Coast — couch, kikuyu, and buffalo — look broadly similar when mowed and healthy. But they grow differently, handle drought differently, respond to shade differently, and need different mowing heights. Treating them the same way produces mediocre results with all three.
This guide covers how to identify which grass you have, what it needs, and what common mistakes look like for each type.
🌱 How to tell them apart
✅Couch grass — very fine narrow blade (1–2 mm wide), rich mid-green, spreads aggressively by surface runners (stolons). Goes straw-coloured in winter but comes back strongly in spring. Loves full sun.
✅Kikuyu grass — broader blade (3–4 mm), slightly rougher texture, bright slightly yellowish green. Sends out both surface runners AND underground rhizomes — invades garden beds and paving cracks persistently.
✅Buffalo grass (Sir Walter) — noticeably wide blade (6–10 mm), soft dense texture, deep green colour. Shade-tolerant — the right choice under established trees or on south-facing blocks.
🌿 The quick-reference cards
🍃 What if you have more than one type?
✅ Many Sunshine Coast properties have more than one grass type — kikuyu invading from the verge, couch in the sunny back yard, a patch of buffalo under the tree. Identify the dominant type and manage the whole lawn at that variety's settings. If you're unsure, send us a photo — we assess the grass type on every new property before we start.

Lawn Mowing & Gardener Services in Buderim and Across the Sunshine Coast
Choosing a local lawn mowing or gardener service on the Sunshine Coast? Here's what to look for, what to expect, and how T-Squared Services delivers it across Buderim, Maroochydore, Caloundra, Noosa and surrounds.
If you're searching for lawn mowing in Buderim or a reliable gardener on the Sunshine Coast, the choice can be overwhelming. There are dozens of operators, every quote sounds the same, and the difference in quality only shows up after the first job. This guide is for property owners who want to skip the trial and error.
We'll cover what a good Sunshine Coast lawn mowing service actually includes, how local conditions (subtropical climate, sandy soils, coastal winds) shape what works, and the questions you should ask before booking anyone — including us.
🌱 What "lawn mowing" should actually mean on the Sunshine Coast
Plenty of operators advertise lawn mowing in Buderim and the wider Sunshine Coast, but a $40 mow that only cuts the grass leaves you doing the rest. A complete visit should always include:
✅Mowing at the correct height for your grass type — couch, kikuyu and buffalo each want different cuts. Sunshine Coast lawns are usually one of the three.
✅Edging along paths, driveways, fences and garden beds — sharp lines, not rough whipper-snipper lines.
✅Walkway blow-down — clippings cleared off paths, driveway and patio.
✅Green waste removal — every clipping, trim and leaf taken offsite the same day.
✅Public liability insurance — non-negotiable on any property on the coast.
Every T-Squared visit includes all five — every time. We don't run optional add-ons; the standard is the standard.
🏡 Buderim, Maroochydore, Caloundra: why local matters
A gardener in Buderim faces conditions a Brisbane operator doesn't. Sunshine Coast soils are sandy, drainage is fast, and afternoon storms in summer can lay down 50 mm of rain in 20 minutes. Lawns recover quickly but mow timing has to flex with the weather. Operators who service the area regularly know which suburbs hold moisture longest, which streets get coastal salt spray, and which grass types thrive where.
A few suburb-specific notes from the road:
📍Buderim — established gardens, mature trees, often on slopes. Buffalo and kikuyu dominate. Hedge work is constant.
📍Maroochydore & Mooloolaba — flatter blocks, plenty of couch lawns, salt-tolerant plantings near the beachfront.
📍Caloundra (incl. Aura, Pelican Waters) — newer estates, mostly couch on small footprints. Hedge planting is heavy because the developer plans rely on visual screening.
📍Noosa, Nambour, Eumundi — bigger acreage properties, mixed grass, longer travel time so we batch these areas on the same days.
🤝 7 questions to ask any Sunshine Coast lawn mowing operator
Before you book anyone — including us — these are the seven that separate a real outfit from someone with a ute and a kanga.
1.Are you fully insured? Ask for the certificate. They should send it without hesitation.
2.Is green waste removed every visit, or do you leave a kerb pile? The right answer is removed.
3.How do you decide cut height? A good operator will ask about your grass type before quoting.
4.What's included in the visit? Mowing only, or mowing + edging + blow-down + waste?
5.What's your booking lead time? Same-week is the Sunshine Coast standard — anything longer means they're stretched.
6.Can I see recent work? Photos, Google reviews, or a property in your suburb you can look at.
7.How do payments work? Clear answer, written invoice, no cash-only weirdness.
🌿 One operator, the whole property
A lawn mowing operator who can't trim hedges, clear weeds or do a full clean-up is just a mower-for-hire. A proper Sunshine Coast gardener handles the whole property — lawn, garden beds, hedges, weeds, debris — on the same visit. T-Squared was set up specifically to be that operator: five services on a single quote, one team, one invoice.
📅 What ongoing maintenance looks like
Most Sunshine Coast lawns benefit from a regular schedule — fortnightly in the warm months, monthly in winter. Regular clients get priority booking and a reminder before each visit. The lawn ends up in better condition year-round (consistent cut height = thicker turf), and you don't have to think about it.
If you're after a one-off — pre-inspection clean-up, sale-prep tidy, or just a property you've let go a bit — that's also fine. We do single visits with the same standard as the regular clients.
